| BASIC LITERACY PROGRAM
1 OUT OF 5 AMERICANS CAN'T READ THIS SENTENCE! But with your help, we can all overcome illiteracy. The adult non-reader needs encouragement to take the first step toward reaching his or her potential. YOU CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE. YOU CAN TEACH SOMEONE TO READ! The Culpeper Literacy Council provides one-on-one tutoring to teach adults how to read, write and do basic math, in addition to our GED, ESOL and El Civics Programs. These services are offered free of charge -- the only thing we require of our students is comittment and a $25.00 registration fee. Because students and tutors have job and family commitments, the time and location of tutoring sessions are flexible. Tutoring can be provided Sunday through Saturday, during the day or in early evening. WE WANT YOU! Come join our team of dedicated volunteer tutors. Some of the fringe benefits of being one of our tutors are: an altered perception of the world; increased understanding and appreciation of different values and lifestyles; increased skill in creative problem-solving, and getting acquainted with other wonderful volunteers such as yourself. WHO DO WE SERVE? Following is a profile of the students we served last fiscal year (July 2008 through June 2009): CALL US AND REGISTER FOR OUR NEXT NEW TUTOR TRAINING. We offer New Tutor Training two to three times a year. We have a limited amount of classroom space, so call early to be put on the waiting list for our next training class. You must attend our six-hour training class in order to become one of our certified tutors. The class is held at the CLC office from 8:45 am to 3 pm. We provide all materials and lunch. | |
